PR lessons you can learn from Pretty Little Liars

If you’ve read some of my previous blog posts (such as this one and this one), you’ll know how much I love finding PR in what seem like usually unrelated places. This post is no different and this week I’ll be discussing Pretty Little Liars….

I’m a little late to the game, but I’m up to about season 4 of PLL now and can safely say I am addicted. For those of you that don’t know, the series follows the lives of 4 girls whose friend has been mysteriously murdered. The girls begin receiving messages, in various forms, from ‘A’ who some how knows, and threatens to expose, all their darkest secrets (its wayyyy more complicated than that, but I’m not here to go into detail!)

But I like to think that I don’t just watch it for entertainment value, there are some things in PR you can learn from it…

The answer isn’t always obvious

In about episode 3, you think you’ve got it all sussed out and you know who this ‘A’ is… (spoiler: you don’t).

I think that this applies to PR in that sometimes your very first idea for a campaign or a client isn’t the one you should always go for. Do a little more research and the true answer will become clear.

Keep some secrets up your sleeve

Obviously the big reveal that will happen eventually (I hope) will be who ‘A’ is and why all this has happened. And that is why so many viewers are hooked and will keep watching to find out who it is.

If you can keep something up your sleeve to keep your audience hooked, your PR campaign will be onto a winner.

Social media is essential

The cast live tweets along with some of the new episodes. The hashtag #PLLchat has been trending in some countries. And the official PLL Twitter (@PLLTVSeries if you’re interested) is consistently posting about current events and trends, as well as chat from the series.

This shows how social media has become part of pretty much everything these days, so you cannot afford to miss it out. Use it to yours or your clients advantage.

Be original

The storyline has more twists and turns than anyone can really keep up with, and most of the time they are completely unexpected.

If you can make your PR campaign this exciting and engaging, you know you’re doing things right!

Do you watch the series? What do you think of it all? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time…
